Frank Whiteley, the Region 9 SSA Director submitted some information for those contemplating traversing the US for Minden:

This TFR was modified Friday evening.

The High Park fire operations TFR (Colorado) was recently expanded. Please inform association members to check TFR and NOTAM daily. This fire operations TFRs can be modified frequently.

Elliott Crawford from Mile High Gliding in Boulder recently advised of the routes some of the fire bombers are taking.

"An Airspace Coordinator visited MHG today and we discussed routes that the tankers will be following between Metro and the High Park fire.

Tankers will fly a circular route. Direction will depend on the runway in use at Metro. If 11 is in use, tankers will depart east and turn north along Hwy 287 till north of Longmont, then turn northwest for the fire. Return to Metro will be southbound along the Front Range intercepting the extended runway centerline at Metro. Altitudes in our area are expected to be 7500 to 8000 msl. Opposite direction of 29 in use.

Please keep a keen eye open for the tankers. I'm asking that gliders and towplanes add 500 feet to their normal altitudes over the first hogback by way extra separation from the tankers. It has taken quite a bit of work on the part of many organizations to figure out this route - please keep clear of it as much as possible."

Other airports may also be in use.

We have one report of a touring type motorglider transiting a fire operations TFR about three weeks ago. Those attending the Minden fly-in July 12-15 please use care transiting the western states if flying any where near a fire zone.

Regards,

Frank Whiteley
