2013 Fifth Annual West Coast Motor Glider Fly-In - Planning Information & Activities

Steve Sliwa

Recommended Posts

Our chairman reports that plans for the next fly-in are going well. Here is his report:

The Touring Motor Glider Association (TMGA) will be holding its fifth annual (national) Fly-In from July 25-28, again at Minden (MEV), Nevada. Based on feedback from the last event, we're adding an additional day this year. We will also be offering, by prior arrangement and in conjunction with SoaringNV, TMG endorsements for rated glider/power pilots, BFR's, and special mountain flying instruction.

Hotel arrangements are being finalized, but we're looking at Walley's Hot Springs & Resort (so think about bringing your favorite co-pilot) and/or another local hotel. We're investigating a dinner cruise on Lake Tahoe, and perhaps a fly-out to San Francisco for lunch at Half Moon Bay.

If the above piques your interest, go to the TMGA web site > Events tab > Future Events section and sign up. If you have any ideas or suggestions, please let us know via the Forum.

Think about joining a "caravan" to Nevada. Post your intentions and see who responds. Also, this would be a good time to fill in the Map data so everyone can see where you are located; remember, there's no automatic upload from your initially-submitted information. To access the input field, go to the Members tab > Maps section. Under the map there is a box that takes you to the data area. It's quick and easy and will really bring the TMGA community together. Of course, even if you know you're not coming, please fill in the Map data.

There's a runor that we might even see one or two overseas pilots in Nevada. We timed our Fly-In event specifically so that pilots might want to go from our event to Oshkosh for the EAA's AirVenture

Stay tuned to this thread and the latest on the "Events" tab to keep track of plans. Please sign-up as soon as practical on our sign-up page.

What is happening with the Self Launching group and the possibility that we can dove tail with their event as in the past?

Walley's would be my choice too.

Please reread my Sept 15 comments/input on the survey especially related to the program, Venue and restaurant.

Flying instruction is great

Will we have a meeting room to ourselves next year?????

The ASA 2013 event is June 23 through July 4th. The July/August period is better for Minden weather so we didn't want to go on the opening side of the ASA meet. We have consciously avoided interesting the July 4th time period because we believe our members don't want to be away from the families/home base on the July 4th weekend. This year we placed the TMGA meet just ahead of the EAA's Oshkosh event so that pilots to make that venue if they so chose. Also, there was some interest in a foreign TMGA contingent who might like to go to both events. The other event we were looking out for is the Arlington, Washington EAA fly-in, which will be just ahead of our.

SoaringNV has taken over additional space at the airport (the old soar Minden office) and we are working with SoaringNV on the exact logistics. I'm confident we'll be better off that in the past.

We're still working on the agenda (presentations and dinners) so please, everyone, post your comments and suggestions in this Forum

Thanks,

Richard

Richard and I met today and have started to get into high gear for planning for the event. Here are some highlights:

  • Plan to do the Lake Tahoe dinner cruise on Thursday evening. Make sure you arrive in time as we will probably depart Minden via ground vehicles at 4:30PM. Those planning on doing the cruise should make sure you have the right headcount signed up on the sign-up sheet here.

  • Plan to do group trek to Half Moon Bay for lunch on Friday with a low-altitude fly-by of the Golden Gate Bridge. We will coordinate with ATC for the best way to do a "Bay Tour" and we will attempt to get pictures of our beautiful birds flying together. Safety and planning briefs on Friday morning.

  • Plan to do a TMG Rally on Saturday. Current vision is to fly to Bishop CA and back. We will ask everyone to keep track of fuel, time, max altitude, engine off time, etc. It will be on the honor system on this first attempt. Our plan is to score it several ways and report the ones who had the best performances for each category. Some may soaring the whole trek and others may motor ... but we will all have fun. If you stop at Bishop (or elsewhere) for fuel or lunch, keep track of the time so it doesn't count against you. Bishop has an excellent Thai restaurant.

  • Gerhard Defner will give a presentation of some of his interesting long-distance flights in a Stemme, for example Germany to Abu Dhabi and Germany to Iceland. Our current plan is that he will give his presentation Saturday evening during the happy hour before our barbecue at the airport restaurant.

  • Annual meeting for the TMGA will be Sunday morning prior to good-byes and departures.

More details will be forthcoming. Please share ideas in this thread of other ways we can make this event fun and valuable to you.

Fellow TMG'ers,

July 25th is right around the corner and we need to know the list of attendees for detailed planning purposes.

1. Number of tie down spaces we need at the Airport

2. Reservation counts, especially for the Thursday night Lake Tahoe Dinner cruise, and the Friday night Basque dinner. Regarding the Lake Tahoe Dinner cruise, I need to get them a check for all dinners by June 10th. The cost is $68/adult. If you're going, I need to know.

3. We're arranging some great fly-outs, to San Francisco Bay and Bishop, CA. We need numbers for the coordination.

4. If you haven't booked your hotels, I suggest you do so ASAP.

5. We're still planning on doing arial photo shoots, and this is number limited.

So, check your calendars and sign up in the TMGA web site > Events tab > 2013 Minden Fly-In section.

Important: If you've already signed up, please go into the file and add the words "current (date)", i.e. in mine you will see "Richard & Penny Pearl - current 5-1". If you're changing anything, change the data in the appropriate box; If you have't signed up, please do so ASAP.

If you're coming from a distance, see if there's anyone who might want to caravan with you, via the website in the Forum.

Remember, the Fly-In is open to anyone who has an interest in touring motor gliders. If you know of anyone, or of any "bulletin boards" please pass this information along.

Regards, and see you in Minden.

Hi! I am an enthusiast interested in your organization and in getting a touring motorglider. Currently, my greatest interest is the Phoenix. My wife and I live in Santa Rosa, CA. I am curious about this Fly-In event in Minden and wondering what I would be able to observe and participate in at your event as a wannabe. I want to see all the aircraft up close, meet any Phoenix owners, and hear the discussions and presentations related to motorgliders. Another possibility for me (being so close to SF) would be to stay home and watch your fleet fly-by of the GG Bridge and your arrival near Half Moon Bay and hopefully get a close look at your aircraft on the ground at whatever local airport you use and join your party in Half Moon Bay.

So, what do you suggest for a wannabe like me? Do you have an agenda yet for your flight to the Bay Area? Do you think I would have more opportunity to see the aircraft and chat with owners iin Minden than if I catch your fly-out at Half Moon Bay? Open to suggestions! Thank you.

Hi JD

You have several airports near you that would be excellent candidates for your TMG. So good luck on your search. My advice would be to come to the event as it would give you a better chance to see the planes, meet the people, and possibly get a test flight. We can't predict the weather, the stop-over airports, and which pilots will join us on the trek. So I think trying to rendezvous on our adventure might not work out to be as valuable as you'd like. Also some people flying with the local operation and some flight instruction. Of course, we would enjoy your company at the morning speaking and evening social events.

Well said, Steve. I am signing up for the event. How soon do you expect to post the complete agenda? Or perhaps could you give me your best guess overview so I can decide which days are the best for wannabes. Thanks!

Our chairman is on a sojourn in Europe until 2nd week in June. Shortly thereafter I expecte events will be firmed up. Main evening social events are:

Thursday - Lake Tahoe Cruise (must sign up by June 1)

Friday - Basque Family-Style Dinner at the Country Club

Saturday - Airport Barbecue

I think we were hoping to do the Informal Race on Friday and the Golden Gate Bridge fly-by on Saturday. Each morning there will be speakers and Richard was thinking of a special speaker Saturday evening prior to the barbecue.

Best attendance is Saturday as some people just come in for the weekend arriving in time for the Basque dinner on Friday. Most people depart late morning on Sunday, if history is any guide.

Steve are you on the program to discuss anything? Like the topic of the web site use etc. as was canceled last year!!! My observation is that we need more activity on the site as to what is happening with fellow MG owners. I'd like to hear short presentations with questions opportunity from the various manuf. reps. including engines like the Rotax.

Haven't totally decided if I want to fly the 3 days to get there and back.......

Hi Steve

The final agenda has yet to be worked out. We have some excellent speakers and I will be at the ready to discuss the website as well.

I think one of the highlights will be our effort to get a flight of perhaps 20 TMGs to jointly fly over the golden gate bridge and take the tour of San Francisco on the way to Half Moon Bay for lunch. What a site that will be! We are keeping our fingers crossed for good weather.
