We are planning a cross-country task for interested pilots on Friday July 26. Here is what I have prepared so far. Any suggestions or feedback?

TMGA Cross-Country Task

Friday – July 26

Task: Minden (KMEV) to Bishop (KBIH) to Minden (KMEV) [118 NM each way]

Background: We’d like to develop some fun-fly competition tasks that are appropriate for Touring Motor Gliders (“TMG”). TMGs are different than sailplanes in that we can fly missions even when it’s not soarable, we can turn the engine off and soar, or we can use lift enroute to improve our performance and reduce our fuel consumption when on a task with the engine on.

Rules:

 • Fly to Bishop airport and back conserving fuel and making good speed, however, other factors will be scored as well. This is an experiment at having fun.
 • Earliest Take-Off is 11:30AM. Must be home by 5:00PM. Choose your departure time carefully.
 • Complete your mission in accordance with the FARs and maximize safety while having fun. Team flying and communications are permitted.
 • We will use the honor system to report times, altitudes, and fuel usage. Those that have soaring computers please save your data files for exchange and later analysis.
 • Ideally you should fill your tanks before departure and then re-fill them when you land so you that your total fuel consumption can be computed.
 • Our plan is to handicap the results based upon ship performance where appropriate.
 • The starting position is at 7700’ over KMEV (3000’ AGL). Those that want to get credit for a complete soaring flight without engine assist should cross the starting point with the engine off.
 • If you land at BIH (excellent lunch), the time on the ground will not count against your speed computations or weighted performance. Restart at 3000’ AGL above BIH.
 • The finish point is over MEV at minimum altitude of 1000’ AGL (5700’ MSL).

Proposed Scoring Categories:

 • Minimum Mission Time
 • Best Ratio of Engine Off Time to Total Time
 • Least Fuel
 • Highest Altitude (last 3000’ must be via soaring)
 • Number of Other TMGs You Spot (Safety Observer Award)

 • Best Handicap Speed
 • Best Handicap Speed to Fuel Usage
 • Best Handicap Score
 • Best Picture(s)

Note: Handicap system will be explored that takes into account soaring performance and power-on performance and we will weight the combination.

Photoship here checking in with great news!

There are four parts to a successful air-to-air photography, and the TMGA fly out is bringing them all together:

 • Lake Tahoe will provide us the beautiful back drop
 • we have an outstanding pilot for the Six
 • my camera is all set up
 • …all we need is you and your beautiful motor glider to complete the picture.

Don’t miss the fun of having your ship photographed in flight!

Check out the results Trade-A-Plane Digital Edition

We are planning on meeting at Minden airport at 6am with wheels up at 6:30 both Friday and Saturday to capture good light and smooth air. If you are interested please email andy@bigandy.com, call 530-305-9370, or check in with Meg or Andy at one of the events.

We plan to brief on Thursday afternoon for Friday AM flights, worst case we will hand out the briefing cards on Thursday night on the boat!

Blue Skies!
