Harris Ranch (CA) Fly-In: May 12, 2012

Get ready for STEAK! One of California's best steak houses is at the Harris Ranch, which has its own airstip (308). We're planning a lunch fly-in for May 12, 2012 to enjoy the food and camaraderie. We're hopeful that this can be coordinated with the Carat group's fly-in, which might stretch out over a few days. I attended their fly-in two years ago.

The facility is readily flyable from both northern and southern California, and is located in the Great Valley immediately alongside Highway 5 at Coalinga (San Francisco sectional). 2,820 X 30 runway; field elevation 470 ft. There are some nearby obstructions (power lines) so check a directory. There is a very nice hotel adjacent to the restaurant/airport if you're so inclined.

We've established a separate sign up sheet in the Events section. If you're a definite, obviously sign up; if you're a potential, check that box.

Please encourage your TMG buddies to attend. As the list develops it might be fun to "team fly" to the event. We're in the process of developing a Member Map and this will be helpful in setting up a flying caravan. We'd like to schedule arriving around 11:00 or 11:30. Depending on the size of the group we might be able to get a separate section of the restaurant, so sign-ups are important for planning.

If you have any thoughts on the event, please post them here.

Regards,

Richard Pearl

The sign-up sheet is a navigation "Link" on the menu bar in the Events section. Or you can find it here: link.

The sign-up sheet might be helpful to allow members link up and fly-in together.

Just wondering if anyone is planning on staying the night at Harris Ranch? I'm planning on staying, perhaps do some soaring, and then explore the central coast wine region around Paso Robles out to Cambria for a couple of days.

Seven TMGs and two power planes converged on the Harris Ranch Restaurant and Hotel Saturday, May 12th for a grand steak lunch. Four Grobs, two Ximango's, and a Moni, plus a Cessna 182 and a Cherokee; fifteen attendees in all.

Everyone was on the ground by about noon. We kicked the tires for a while, then headed about 100 yards to one of the best steak houses you'll ever find. You knew the steaks had to be both outstanding and fresh because you could smell the feed lot only a quarter mile away. The Ranch is about 160 miles south of Sacramento, and immediately adjacent to I-5. The weather was hot (90F), winds calm with the occasional thermal to "tank up" in.

Several of us loaded up on beef to bring home, something that's really hard to do with a regular sailplane.

Pictures are uploaded in the Gallery section of the website.

Ron Snedecor suggested another outing to the Paso Robles wine tasting area (just west of the Ranch) for a long weekend: arrive Friday, taste on Saturday, fly home Sunday. Sounds like a plan!
