Exhaust pipe crack observed

Ron Hess

Recommended Posts

During the annual inspection of N70JZ this year, inspector identified a crack in the exhaust pipe.  Looks like i will order new one, but may weld-patch the pipe for a short term fix.

Jim did not know of any other owners reporting this type of failure.  I have included pictures here so that other owners can add a visual check to their pre-flight if desired.

Russ Owens had a cracked exhaust pipe like yours, which was removed, repaired, and replaced.

I've been wiggling the end of the pipe during pre-flight to detect this sort thing, but now I wonder if that would only detect a large crack, and miss a developing ones. I think I will switch to visual inspection of the weld.

It looks like it was reinforced with a partial sleeve, which should withstand the vibration better. The welding looks lovely. Was the muffler removed to do the welding?
