Ron Hess
During the annual inspection of N70JZ this year, inspector identified a crack in the exhaust pipe. Looks like i will order new one, but may weld-patch the pipe for a short term fix. Jim did not know of any other owners reporting this type of failure. I have included pictures here so that other owners can add a visual check to their pre-flight if desired.
Registered Eric Greenwell Posted October 30, 2019 Registered Report Share Posted October 30, 2019 Russ Owens had a cracked exhaust pipe like yours, which was removed, repaired, and replaced. I've been wiggling the end of the pipe during pre-flight to detect this sort thing, but now I wonder if that would only detect a large crack, and miss a developing ones. I think I will switch to visual inspection of the weld.
Ron Hess
Completed annual today, very happy with the repaired exhaust on 70JZ.
Registered Eric Greenwell Posted November 24, 2019 Registered Report Share Posted November 24, 2019 It looks like it was reinforced with a partial sleeve, which should withstand the vibration better. The welding looks lovely. Was the muffler removed to do the welding?
Ron Hess
Yes the muffler was removed and reinforced at the shop. Then reinstalled by JM aero services @ Byron CA
