  1. July 2012 Annual Fly-In

    The 4th Annual Fly-In is now in the history books and by all accounts it was a resounding success: 22 ships from 7 states across the country, 34 pilots and co-pilots, 50+ TMG-interested participants. Add to this all the camaraderie, great accommodations at Walley's Hot Springs Resort and Spa, wonderful food at all three restaurants, and outstanding presentations on TMG's, mountain flying, and soaring/ aviation in general. And of course there was the usual world-class Minden weather. After three years of three-day events we decided to extend the Fly-In by one day?and we still didn't have enough time to accomplish everything. Wow, this thing is really taking on a life of its own! Ships began arriving Wednesday, a day early, with virtually everyone on the flight-line by Thursday: Grob, Ximango, Lambada, Taifun, Diamond, Stemme, Scheibe, Moni, and Mira Slovak's Bucher Jungmann. We were individually welcomed by Minden-Tahoe Airport Executive Director Bobbi Thompson and her excellent and efficient staff. Dinner Thursday was at the local-area brew pub/restaurant, Flight, where we had a private room reserved for us. Most everyone stayed at Walley's Resort, a short ten-minute drive to the facility nestled at the base of the Sierra. We believe the spouses, especially, loved it. The formal kick-off was Friday morning, beginning with introductions, followed by presentations on the local area (Laurie Harden, owner of SoaringNV, and Bobbi Thompson), mountain weather (Fred LaSor -- local glider specialist), and aero-medical issues (Dr. Morgan McCarrol). A quick lunch and most of the ships launched. Peak climb that day was just over 16,000 feet (a not unusual altitude at Minden). Our Photographer-In-Chief, Andy Robinson (Big Andy) started the first of several air-to-air photo missions. Andy's Cherokee 6 is the aerial platform; pilot and master aircraft mechanic Michael Haisten (Auburn Airplane Works) flies while Andy shoots through the space where the rear door has been removed. This is VERY precision flying and thorough pre-flight briefs are mandatory. You can see some of Andy's work in the Gallery section of the web site. There's nothing quite like a picture of you in your ship with the spectacular Lake Tahoe in the background. If you come next year, you need to sign up early for this very special opportunity. Dinner on Friday night was at the Basque restaurant located at the Carson Valley Country Club. We warned everyone to come hungry; everyone went home stuffed and happy. Saturday morning started with individual introductions, followed by a talk on mountain-flying techniques by SoaringNV chief pilot and instructor Russell Holtz (flying wiz and author of some of the best soaring instructional guides on the market), and a detailed weather briefing. Lunch, and then launching into the cloudless sky for another high-flying day. Dinner that evening was at the Minden-Tahoe Airport Taildragger restaurant. BBQ steak or chicken with all the fixings. The highlight Sunday morning was the introduction to the group of Mira Slovak, and a DVD showing of his extra-ordinary life and accomplishments. Aviator (Continental Airlines), motorboat racer (national champion in the unlimited hydroplane class), TMG record-setter (Germany to Santa Paula, CA in his just-constructed Fournier), and patriot (he escaped from Communist-dominated Czechoslovakia in 1953 to Western Berlin by commandeering one of his airline's aircraft. In the DVD you see him attaching an American flag emblem to the tail of his Fournier prior to the initial launch, and hear the special song/music written about freedom and the desire to achieve one's goals). All this, and being just a wonderful, approachable, human being. It was an honor and a privilege to have at the event; Mira received a standing ovation from the crowd when he completed his talk, and is looking forward to returning next year, perhaps in a Fournier. Bobbi Thompson (Minden-Tahoe Airport director presented awards for coming the longest distance (Al and Susan Simons - Connecticut), oldest pilot (Rolf Isley), and youngest pilot (Eric Sweeney). Special TMGA coffee mugs were given to all pilots and copilots attending. The TMGA presented the "Flight Line" award to Lambada for having the most aircraft (6) on the tarmac this year. This is a perpetual award; we retroactively included Pipistral (2009), Ximango (2010), and Stemme (2011) as previous winners. A TMGA "Judges Choice Award for Aircraft Excellence" was presented to Steve Sliwa for his beautiful Ximango, and a "Pilots Choice for Aircraft Excellence" was presented to Eric Sweeney for his hand-crafted Moni. Concluding the Fly-In was assembling the group for a Photo. This year we all gathered around the Flight-Line award winner Lambada while Andy Robinson snapped away. Special thanks to Laurie Harden, owner of SoaringNV for providing the hangar space to hold the event and general logistics. Several TMGA members took advantage of her operation to gain pure-sailplane soaring; without a doubt, they?re better TMG pilot's because of that experience. Special thanks to Bobbi Thompson and her staff (Chris, Cathie, and ?Mountain Mike?) for their invaluable support. Finally, special thanks to Ron Snedecor for the on-site logistical coordination. (Yours truly was presented with a special cow bell by Laurie and Ron, wearing ?Where's Richard? t-shirts. Apparently they were unimpressed with my spending a few hours during the afternoons with my wife at Walley's). Somehow, we ran out of time for scheduled presentations. Steve Sliwa ("our web site guru") and Michael Haisten & Eric Sweeney were unable to give their talks on how to get the most out of the web site, and mechanical issues, respectively. Next year, guys, we promise. Perhaps we'll have to extend the Event yet another day. We have a few official TMGA coffee mugs left. The price is $7 each plus shipping. Please advise and we'll ship until we run out. If there are a lot of people wanting them we'll put in a new order. And now it's on to planning for next year. We need to find out when potentially competing events are going on so as to reduce scheduling conflicts. We will also be sending out a follow-up questionnaire about the event, asking for your comments and suggestions on how we can improve the Event.   2. 2013 Annual Fly-In - West

    2013 Western US Touring Motor Glider Fly-In July 25-28, 2013 | Minden, NV The TMGA recently completed its 5th annual Fly-In. Thirteen ships - coming from California, Nevada, Texas, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, and Florida - made the journey. Altogether, we had thirty participants (pilots, copilots/family, interested pilots). A resounding success! Each year brings new challenges, and improvements. The weather was somewhat challenging this year, but there was also outstanding soaring. Our on-site host, SoaringNV added a complete, air-conditioned, office suite that was a marked improvement over the open hangar. Many of us went on a delightful diner cruise on beautiful Lake Tahoe. The Saturday night presentation by Gerhard Deffner on his trip in his Stemme from Germany to Iceland and back was spellbinding. We expended the fly-in to four days (Thursday - Sunday) and that seemed to be a big hit. Andy Robinson did a fabulous job of aerial photography with those pilots who signed up for pictures over Lake Tahoe. We're starting our planning for 2014. It will most likely be in late June. Start thinking about it now, and if you have any ideas, let us know via the Forum.

  7. 2012 - June - TMGA Fly-In Info Bulletin

    We are now just one month from the fourth annual TMGA fly-in, scheduled for July 12 – 15 at Minden, Nevada (MEV). We had 25 ships on the flight line last year and we expect to significantly improve on that number this year. As of this date we have 29 ships and 55 total participants (pilots, copilots, interested TMG’ers) signed up as either a Definite or a Probable. We continue to expect 40 ships on the flight line at the kick-off. If you are planning on attending, we need you to sign up Now! See page 2, point 1. This email contains some very important information, so please review it in its entirety. The Fly-In will again feature morning briefings and knowledge-sharing, flying the spectacular Sierra, and great meals. We may do a local fly-out for lunch one day. If you have any ideas for the morning sessions, please advise either directly to me (pennyrich@aol.com) or through the Event discussion Thread. On Saturday evening, after dinner, we will have a special showing of the life and exploits of Mira Slovak. Among his many accomplishments in both civil aviation (airline captain) and on the water (unlimited hydroplane boat racing), Mira holds the world record for the longest private-ship test flight when he flew his 36 horsepower Fournier from Germany to Santa Paula, California. The best news is that Mira, himself, is scheduled to join us in his Bucker Jungmann bi-plane. This is an event you won’t want to miss!!!!!!!!!!!! Lodging The Event committee has made special arrangements with David Walley’s Resort, Hot Springs, and Spa (www.davidwalleys-resort.com) for accommodations. Walley's is an old-time hot springs resort that sits above the Carson Valley at the base of the Sierras and looks out over the Carson Valley. People long ago traveled here by steam train and stagecoach to soak in the natural hot springs. It sits just south of the tiny town of Genoa, which has the oldest bar in Nevada. It is about five miles from the Minden/Tahoe airport. The spa/hot springs has been developed into a very large full hotel facility with a restaurant, saloon, and cafe. They have about seven separate hot spring pools and one large regular pool. Negotiated room rates are: $79 for a studio, $109 for a single bedroom, and $139 for a two- bedroom suite (perfect for doubling up and bringing the per night fee down to $70). All rates plus local taxes. With the optional Spa and hot springs ($10/day/ person) this property might be the PERFECT opportunity to bring a non-pilot spouse, S.O., or friend to the event. Each one-bedroom unit could also accommodate another person in the sleeper- couch. We suggest you book your room ASAP. The weekend of our event is also the weekend of the Death Ride, a major bicycle event that draws thousands of people to the area. There are other options locally (south Carson City, Topaz, or if you’re very lucky somewhere in the Minden/Gardnerville area). We hope to get everyone at Walley’s, however. It will be a great experience, and it will certainly make the transportation logistics easier. If you are planning on coming, we need you to do the following ASAP: Sign up for the Fly-In now, in the Event tab. If you’re a “probable” or “possible” please also sign up. If you know of any non TMG pilot or interested person who wants to attend, please invite them and have them sign up also. Everyone is welcome! Please make sure your information is up to date. Enter your data in the pilot mapping section of the web site: Members > Map section. There is a data entry button at the bottom of the page. It’s critical to the long-term success of the TMGA that we get all our pilots ‘plotted’, and even more critical for those coming to the Fly-In from other states or regions for Buddy Flying purposes. We will have a separate Thread for those long-distance travellers who might want to link up for the flight. Make your reservations at Walley’s now. Reservations should be made directly with the Resort (1-775-782-8155), mentioning that you are with the Touring Motor Glider Association. We will have a separate Thread for those who are interested in sharing accommodations in a two-bedroom suite (suite availability is a possible, not a definite). We need to know when you’re arriving and what dinners you will be attending – see the Event tab, sign up section. If you’re local and have a car to help with transportation, let us know via the “Ground Transportation” column in the signup sheet. We’ve negotiated good rates with Enterprise Rent-A-Car. Compact car at $33.99/day; mid to full size car - $39.99/day. 775.782.7752. At this point we’ve got a lot of people who need transportation. An 8-person van is $11.25/day per person. If you want to participate in the van(s), indicate in the “Share a Van” column of the sign-up sheet. Note, the vans will only be going to David Walley’s, so get your reservation there first. If you’re interested in the Photo Shoot (see below in the Other section), indicate such interest in the “Photo Shoot” column. Finances The nightly tie down fee is $8. You will be given a form upon arrival as part of the Welcoming packet. This needs to be paid directly to the airport. This year we will be charging an Event Registration fee of $20 per ship plus $10 for each pilot/co-pilot/participant to cover various hard cost expenditures (airport staff, facilities, appetizers and soft drinks/water, etc.). There is a $10 discount for full TMGA Members ($15/year, see Members tab > Join/Contribution section). Please bring cash or a check for this, or you can pay through PayPal via one of our computers if you don’t have your computer. Meals Thursday night you’re on your own but we’re suggesting Flight, a restaurant just down the street from the airport. It’s an “American Pub” spot. We’ll have a separate room for the TMGA. Friday night we’re off to the Carson Valley Country Club, which is a Basque restaurant. Suffice it to say you need to bring your appetite. We’ll again have our own room. Cost is a flat $30, which includes food, wine, tax, and tip. What a deal! Saturday night will be a dinner at the Airport restaurant, the Taildragger. Steak or chicken with all the fixin’s. Flat cost – about $23 per person (includes one drink). You’re also on your own for lunches, but the Taildragger is great for lunch as well as breakfast or dinner. For the Friday night Basque dinner, we can’t overload the restaurant with 60 + individual credit cards all converging at once; there is an ATM machine at the Taildragger restaurant on the field. Our thought is to collect the funds for both Friday and Saturday nights on Friday morning. More on this later. Other This year we’re instituting the perpetual award: the TMGA Cup”, which will be presented to the TMG model with the most ships on the flight line: As of now, Ximango is in the lead with 5 ships, followed by Grob and Lambada with 4 ships, Diamond and Fournier with 3 ships, a three-way tie with two ships (Pipistrel, Taifun, Phoenix), and one each for Carat, SPF, Moni, and HB 23. It’s time to support your model, owners! If you’re coming from out of the area, see if a flight “buddying up” is a viable option. Check the roster and check the Member tab > Maps section for potential buddies. Photo Shoot: Picture a digital photo of your TMG over Lake Tahoe. One of our members, an experienced aerial photographer, is bringing his Cherokee 6 to the meet for use as the airborne platform. Cost will be about $95 (cash or check). Availability is somewhat limited so it’s on a first come, first served basis. Photography will be done in the (earlier) morning. This is very exacting flying and we will be having pre-flight orientations. Please bring rope/straps for tie downs. Reminder: the TMGA web site is an “Opt In” web site. In this system you have to request the information and then you will continue to automatically receive it; but that means: no request, no information (alternatively, you could manually check all information periodically). We designed it this way because of the wide extent of the information contained within the web site. Bottom line, it’s important that you look at each area and select those areas you want. Walley's is an old-time hot springs resort that sits above the Carson Valley at the base of the Sierras and looks out over the Carson Valley. People long ago traveled here by steam train and stagecoach to soak in the natural hot springs. It sits just south of the tiny town of Genoa, which has the oldest bar in Nevada. It is about five miles from the Minden/Tahoe airport. The spa/hot springs has been developed into a very large full hotel facility with a restaurant, saloon, and cafe. They have about seven separate hot spring pools and one large regular pool. It's a great place for the family with the spa, barbecues, and other activities. The rooms are very nice. Generally, the studios face west and look at the mountainside. The one bedroom and two bedroom rooms mostly face east looking out over the Carson Valley and also have full kitchens. See attached photo’s. Negotiated room rates are: $79 for a studio, $109 for a single bedroom, and $139 for a two-bedroom suite (perfect for doubling up and bringing the per night fee down to $70). All rates plus local taxes. With the optional Spa and hot springs ($10/day/person) this property might be the PERFECT opportunity to bring a non-pilot spouse, S.O., or friend to the event. We were able to secure a guaranteed 30 rooms at Walley’s: 15 studios and 15 one-bedroom (total 30 units). In theory you could book a studio and a one-bedroom to make a two bedroom, so there are thirty “slots”. Each one-bedroom unit could also accommodate another person in the sleeper-couch. There should be more rooms opening up starting June 12th (this is a time-share property); not guaranteed, but highly probable. There are also rooms available in Carson City, about 20 miles north of Minden, and possibly in Minden. The 30 Walley’s units are now available on a first come – first served basis. To secure it you must contact Walley’s and place a non- refundable one-night deposit to secure your reservation (see point 3, below). After our block of rooms are fully reserved, pilots will be put on a waiting list, but you do have options of securing other rooms (possibly cheaper, or more expensive) at other locations. We hope to get everyone at Walley’s. It will be a great experience, and it will certainly make the transportation logistics easier. Regarding transportation, we have traditionally relied on our pilot “locals”, plus visiting pilots who group together and rent cars. We are also looking into renting a large van and splitting costs among users. More on this later. If you are planning on coming, we need you to do the following ASAP: Sign up for the Fly-In now, in the Event tab. If you’re a “probable” or “possible” please also sign up. If you know of any non TMG pilot or interested person who wants to attend, please invite them and have them sign up also. Everyone is welcome! Enter your data in the pilot mapping section of the web site: Members > Roster > Roster Map. There is a data entry button at the bottom of the page. It’s critical to the long-term success of the TMGA that we get all our pilots ‘plotted’, and even more critical for those coming to the Fly-In from other states or regions for Buddy Flying purposes. We will have a separate Thread for those long- distance travellers who might want to link up for the flight. Make your reservations at Walley’s now. July is golf heaven in the Carson Valley and there is another large event going on in the Valley at the same time as our event...so don’t delay! There will be a catered dinner Thursday night in the Soaring NV hangar ($15), a Basque dinner Friday night at the Carson Valley Country Club ($30), and a BBQ at the Airport put on by the Taildragger restaurant ($20). Prices are approximate. If you’re local and have a car to help with transportation, let us know. Rental cars are available at the airport from Hertz and Enterprise. We’ll try to get a negotiated rate. More on this later. We’re working on a registration fee concept to include prepaying for the meals and tie down fee ($5/night) to lessen the on-site confusion and accounting. This year we will also be charging an Event Registration fee of $20 per ship plus $10 for each pilot/ participant to cover various hard cost expenditures (airport staff, facilities, etc.). There is a $10 discount for full TMGA Members ($15/year, see Members tab > Join/Contribution section). If you’re coming from out of the area, see if a flight “buddying up” is a viable option.
