After a harsh winter, finally, the first good soaring day of 2014. This day my sweetie and I intercepted a convergence line that started near Dunlap, TN, on the west side of the Sequatchie Valley and followed it about 40 miles to the northeast. Then, we crossed over to the ridge on the east plateau and rode the wonder wind evening glass off all they way home at 90 kts in strong ridge lift. The amazing part was we didn't even take off until after 4:00PM and none of it was forecast. Photo taken 3-7-14 near Pikeville, TN.

Occasionally when flying near the Tennessee River we'll see these guys. This particular day we flew with 4 baldies in two different thermals about an hour apart. Hard to miss that bright white head and tail. I first noticed this one when it was about 2000' below us. It came through us in that thermal like a freight train and kept right on going all the way into the cloud until it disappeared. We have several resident pairs in the area, or it could be a transient from Florida making their way back south as winter approaches. Photo taken 10-14-13 by Susan Lawton

Spectacular fall color isn't done justice by the camera. Note the hang glider just off the right tip. Actually, there are 15 hang gliders in this photo, but most are reduced to specks by the wide angle lens. Playing with a new camera angle for the tail camera in this photo. I think it needs to be rotated slightly to the left to include a little more fuselage.

I snapped this photo on an early morning flight as I was passing by the west side of Atlanta, GA, motoring my way to Cairo, GA. If you look close you can see the skyline of Atlanta in the morning haze with the faint outline of Stone Mountain, a 1686' granite dome just east of Atlanta, in the background behind the skyline.

A photo from my BFR in March of 2012. Instead of droning around in a C-172 with an instructor who is just trying to build time I decided to do this year's BFR in a North American T-6 "Texan". After a few minutes the instructor figured out that I was right at home in the T-6 after years of towing gliders with a 300 hp Pawnee. So, it turned into an aerobatic lesson. I learned more on this BFR than any I've had in the last 20 years. Photo taken 3-31-12

Here's another tail shot of my Europa XS. This photo made the cover of the British Europa Club's "Europa Flier" Newsletter. Since I do sailplane tuning and finish work my Europa has all the little doodads you'd find on high performance racing sailplanes, i.e., positive seals and Mylar on the ailerons, antiservo tabs and rudder, flap gap seals, wing root seals, and cockpit ventilation capture. It's fast and quiet.
