Engine Problems Diagnosis

I am in the process of archiving the files and threads from the G109 Yahoo Groups into the TMGA Knowledgebase. A couple of these archived threads have resulted in users posting comments in the Knowledgebase. It's good to keep those comments there, but perhaps there are other that would like to continue the conversation. Since we use the forums as a place for dialogs, I thought I would post those threads here:

Subject: engine problems

This is a copy of a email we have sent to an expert in the UK. we are currently trying to diagnose a persistent problem with our 109b. Has anyone experienced similar problems?

I replaced all of the parts that you sent (both intake manifolds, both carbs, all four spark plugs) and we also readjusted the valves per the maintenance manual (0.016 in/4mm) and we initially gained 100 RPM during runup.

We double-checked the linkages and we think we have them adjusted as close as possible. However, there are a couple of loose linkage ball joints that may affect performance. The aircraft ran fine for a day or so but we are experiencing intermittent loss of RPM (approx 200-300 RPM).

Thanks, Bill Lyon

Here is a comment posted in the Knowledgebase:

I had a similar problem with my 109a. It turned out to be a tiny hole in the carby diaphragm. I put in a new set and the same thing happened again! This time it was my fault as I had not fitted the locating lug on the diaphram into the slot provided for it in the carby casting.

DOH!

Also, check the dashpot oil as it should be just full enough to feel some resistance when jiggling it about before screwing it back in.

I hope this helps.
