  • I found that to be inconvenient. I would like my airbrakes, once
again, to lock when fully deployed. But my current mechanic says he
doesn't see a way to achieve that.

My airbrakes used to lock when fully deployed (open). Then, after one
mechanic "adjusted" them, they no longer did.

    1. Do your brakes lock when fully deployed? (Isn't this standard on
    sailplanes?)

    2. Can you suggest a way to have them lock again?

One observation: when the first mechanic "adjusted" the brakes, he
used the specs in the book (always an iffy proposition in a
sailplane). Now the brakes come up "higher" out of wing, when fully
deployed. Would increasing that clearance height have an effect on
    the brakes' ability to lock?

    Bruce,

I second that.  Mine do not lock in the full out position.  You have to hold the lever all the way back to keep them fully deployed.  They only lock down in the fully closed position.

    Bruce,
My wings just over a year old and brakes will stay fully open. On one
occasion, when my passenger accidentally unlocked the brakes, they sprang to
the fully open position and will also stay in this position when the
    aircraft is static.  Paul

    Bruce,

I would echo Paul here. My spoilers will stay open in a static  situation or
in the air, but they aren't "locked" per se. It's more of a slight  "over
center" situation. On the ground I can close them from the spoiler  with little
resistance, but they will stay open with the lever all the way back  if left
alone. I've opened and closed them many times over the past  few weeks from the
spoiler while I've been contouring the spoiler caps to  match the wing profile.
Quite a bit quicker than climbing in and out of the  airplane to open or
close them to check progress on the contouring.

    Hope it helps!

    Regards,

    John:

Please tell us more about contouring the spoiler caps.
