  • It seems to get worse over time. The alternator noise is louder than the human

    Hi,

The intercom (a flightcom 403mc) in #97 was always quite noisy. It does a good
job monitoring the alternator, gyro and fuel pump.

It seems to get worse over time. The alternator noise is louder than the human
voice. If I try to suppress it with the squelch, my neighbor must scream into
    his micro to get through.

A avionics guy had a look at it, tried a filter in the hot wire, tried another
intercom box and tried to ground it in a different way. No change. Their
recommendation is to replace it with something more expensive and - most
important - use shielded wire for all audio inputs.

    Does anybody have a recommendation??

    Thanks in advance,

    Roland.

Check the ground.  We had similar trouble with #123 until we found that
the intercom install was not grounded properly.  I suspect that your
avionics guy has checked this already, but it worked for me.
    All the best,
    Tom Frazer

My plane #96 came with a Northern Airborne Technology "AA83 InterMUSIC
Stereo Crew Intercom System" installed. I don't know what the cost was
    but it works great.

    Roland:

Yes, a better intercom with proper wires should work fine. My very early
model has the Telex PC-4, which is a nice unit, albeit expensive. The
factory switched to using less expensive units, which just don't work very
well. As I recall, Horst has a fancy one as well. In this case, you get what
    you pay for.

We have some recent painful experience with intercoms on the TG-14 and are
    learning that two things help:

    1.  Use shouldered fiber (insulating) washers on all jacks, in order to keep
the jacks from grounding to the panel and talking to each other or the
    aircraft.

    2.  Leave the shields floating at the jack and ground them at the intercom.

Most installations work fine with neither of these actions, but we believe
most gremlins are in one of these two areas.

What is the status of the TG-14s?  Are they still grounded by the Air Force?
Are there reasons for the grounding other than the flight manuals not telling
them how to fly above 5000,' which the news stories seem to say is the only
    problem?
    Thanks for any information.
