Bruce Schimmel who has been carrying the load should be thanked for =20
his volunteer efforts. Bruce recently brought up the idea of =20
switching to a Google Group site. In a recent e-mail on that thread =20
I suggested that more of community website with an upgraded Forum =20
engine might be the approach to go for with the next generation. In =20
a side conversation Bruce encouraged me to bring up a prototype for =20
the XOG membership to consider. As the newest guy on the block, I =20
think it's appropriate for me to pay my dues by trying to get the new =20=
website community started ...
Please take a look at: http://xog.memberlodge.org/
Note that it works well with MS Explorer and Firefox. I can attest =20
that some of the editing functions do not work well in Safari.
It has an enhanced Forum website that will allow you to edit inputs, =20
insert links, and/or include pictures. I took the liberty of =20
dividing the Forums into several categories to help with search of =20
archival data. Note that only members can create topics and add =20
comments. In your membership area you set up the subscriptions for =20
each forum or topic individually to send you e-mail messages either =20
immediately, daily, or weekly for changes in the respective forums.
Note at the top of the Forums Summary page I have included a link to =20
the ListServ archive. We will keep that alive for now, but we hope =20
to find a way to get the data moved into the new community for =20
searching, if we decide to go with the community idea.
The new website also includes a Photo Albums section. One is for =20
Flickr (set up by XimangoUSA) and another is via a MobileMe Gallery. =20=
Flickr allows more of a forum approach for sharing. But one downside =20=
is that slideshows of the collections can not be shared until the =20
content has been approved by Flickr management, generally 3 to 5 days =20=
for small collections. MobileMe allows for easy upload and download =20
of pictures and has nice viewing functions (I like carousel mode =20
myself). It does not allow extensive comments though. I am not sure =20=
if we should keep both approaches or which one will suit us best. =20
(Feedback is needed). Note that I initiated these collections with =20
resources found on the web. If anyone has any material that you =20
would like to me to delete or change, please let me know. In the =20
meantime, I encourage people to add content to the various albums.
There is a start to a rudimentary meeting/event calendar function.
There are starts to a Links page and a Resources page. [Help ... send =20=
me more].
In the 'member only' areas one can see a membership roster (note that =20=
each member specifies what data in his/her profile is visibile to =20
others) and there is placeholder page inserted for future surveys.
A couple of notes. A community website will only be as good as the =20
participants, the sense of collegiality, and the willingness to =20
share. The encapsulated tools permit plenty of interactions among =20
members. However, it is also pretty easy to add static content, =20
links, graphics, pictures, and/or new pages/areas as suggested. It =20
is relatively straightforward with these tools, now that initial =20
learning curve is over.
After we get going there might be other volunteers to help administer =20=
the website. For now, I think I have it set up so it will be low =20
cycles for our activity level (perhaps increasing) and our size and I =20=
will keep paying dues, assuming the XOG want this type of community =20
site.

Thanks Bruce. Actually, I enjoyed working on the project this =20
weekend. My wife commented I must have been up to something fun. In =20=
any case, it seems like we all share passion on the Ximango and =20
hopefully a virtual community will help increase our enjoyment. =20
Everyone please keep sending suggestions and I will tweak if possible.
You asked the following:
Question: -- do you have a tunnel to the old archive?
Answer: Yes. I put it on top of the Forums Summary Page. Here is a =20=
link: http://xog.memberlodge.org/Default.aspx?pageId=3D297075
Do you think I should create a separate page and menu selection (easy =20=
to do) or do you think this is enough?
Question: -- is there a way to subscribe to forums and be emailed a =20
daily summary of posts?
Answer: Yes, I just sent an e-mail describing. Will add to the Site =20=
Updates (BLOG) section, but let me repeat here as well ...
Method for Subscribing to Forums:
(1) Become a member (free)
(2) Go to the Forums Summary Page to see a summary of activity
(3) Go to the individual Forum pages from the menu on the left or the =20=
links on the Summary Page.
(4) Near the top right of the page just click on the 'subscribe' link =20=
for each forum.
(5) After subscribing to each Forum go to the Member Application page =20=
(selecting it from menu on the left)
(6) Click on link to 'edit member profile'
(7) Click the link for 'subscriptions'
(8) Click on the link for each Forum for which you want to change the =20=
frequency (immediate, daily, weekly)
Now when news items or questions come up in a Forum you will be =20
notified via e-mail.
