rayjb60
I have two possible routes to Minden this year depending on where I'm in a hurry or want some new scenery.I really like this SkyVector site for route planning and then enter all the waypoints/airports in Duats http://www.duats.com before the flight to get TFR's, weather, PIREPS etc on the route plus wind compensated leg times, fuel estimates etc.Thats how I do my flight planning. I don't file a flight plan but do get enroute flight following if it seems like a busy day or the MOAs are active.Last time the MOA was active in the Owens Valley with F22 Raptors so I flew below the MOA at 1800 AGL while the curious F-22's came down for a look. They are truly hard to see due to the profile, color and speed. My in cockpit guidance is Moving Map software designed for gliders "LK8000" (Free http://www.lk8000.it ) running on an iPaq 310 personal navigator and powered by 12v engine battery so it can last the whole flight. Pic below just under the headset.I like the LK8000 software because you dont have to be precise with finger clicks on the touch screen which I found out first hand really helps in turbulence. As a matter of fact once my route is entered I dont have to touch it as all the info I need (configurable) is on the same screen except for the airport frequencies which just need a tap on the airport to reveal.Scenery484 Miles:http://skyvector.com/?ll=39.04319059471913,-120.14459884996512&chart=16&zoom=2&plan=A.K2.CA89:A.K2.KHMT:A.K2.KREI:A.K2.8CL0:A.K2.L94:A.K2.74CL:A.K2.KPTV:A.K2.D86:A.K2.9CA7:A.K2.CL24:A.K2.0CL0:A.K2.34CN:A.K2.KCPU:A.K2.KJAQ:A.K2.KAUN:A.K2.KBLU:A.K2.KTRK:A.K2.KCXP:A.K2.KMEVQuick 390 Miles:http://skyvector.com/?ll=38.8788667853023,-119.58086241699753&chart=16&zoom=2&plan=A.K2.CA89:A.K2.KHMT:A.K2.KREI:A.K2.8CL0:A.K2.L00:A.K2.L71:A.K2.KIYK:A.K2.O26:A.K2.2O7:A.K2.KBIH:G.37.73124338097018,-118.74257321782808:G.38.093267006733605,-119.18614852743787:A.K2.O57:A.K2.NV72:A.K2.N59:A.K2.KMEVAnyone else care to share their route?Skyvector hints: Right click to mark a point and chose "Plan"Once your route is complete the upper right of the Map has "Link" which you can then save the URL and email or message it to your friends.Get the next sectional by clicking on the sectional names in the upper right of the window. Steve Sliwa
Hi RayI actually use FltPlan.com (because that's what I use for my power plane and instrument flying) for my flightplans. I have been using ForeFlight on my iPad more and more. I really like it.In my cockpit we will be experimenting with the Garmin GPSMap 496 wired into airplane power (and it also programs the radios from its database) as our main MFD. We will be experimenting with the iPad via battery connector to the cigarette lighter type plug as well. However, to show our planned route I have joined SkyVector and plotted it here: link We will be coming directly with a fuel stop at KLKV. Turns out LKV is a great waypoint as it helps us to thread the needle between the MOAs and Restricted Airspaces, which are active most of the time. I am predicting trip time of 5 hours including fuel stop.Looking forward to seeing everybody.

Guest chasers03
I use the flight planner at AOPA http://www.aopa.org/test/aifp/#help=about/performance.xhtml is my current out route and coming back is http://www.aopa.org/test/aifp/#help=about/performance.xhtml. I have a 496 with weather. I also have Foreflight on my Iphone and this year for backup GPS girlfriend Carrell has purchased an Ipad which I will also load my Foreflight on. I don't file a flight plan. I wear a spot as my ELT. I always use Flight Following.
