Here I'm over the town of Palmer, TN, above the western escarpment of the Cumberland Plateau looking east at the convergence line over the eastern escarpment. This is very typical of an early summertime day in the Sequatchie Valley. Convergence lines form over both plateaus, leaving a blue valley in the middle. Lift is near continuous under the convergence line making for outstanding cross country conditions. This day offered 6-7 knot lift topping at around 7000' msl allowing me to fly a 180 nm triangle in about 4 hours. Photo taken 6-13-12.

We're getting a day here and a day there. Overall it's been a worse than average spring based on my 34 years of soaring in this area. Bases have been considerably lower and the climbs have been weaker than usual this year. Summer between late June and mid August is usually hot, hazy, humid and stable, nothing going up without a motor. Kind of depends on where the Bermuda high sets up. If it sets up off shore we get a persistent southerly flow and all the scuz from Atlanta and Birmingham. Visibilities will drop to MVFR levels. So, we usually go paddling and wait for things to dry out in mid August. If it sets up farther west it can be really good, but that is a fairly rare occurrence.
