    AMT-300 Turbo XIMANGO Touring Motorglider

There are those who say there is no substitute for horsepower. Touring glider enthusiasts who belong to that school have a new icon - the Turbo Ximango. Take one Super Ximango, add a 115-hp Rotax 914 installation and a dozen or so other refinements around the airframe that the Grupo Aeromot engineers have been wanting to implement and you have the AMT-300, the newly-certified and latest of the Ximango family.

As you approach the new Turbo Ximango it is difficult, at first glance, to spot the differences. The NACA inlets in the nose are slightly larger and a little lower in the cheeks than on the Super Ximango 200. The composite constant-speed propellers blade shape is slightly wider and huskier-looking. Even subtler, there is a newly- redesigned aileron undersurface which lightens stick forces at the higher end of the airspeed range.

All the important distinguishing characteristics are unchanged - the unique folding wings, the mechanical gear retraction and wide wheel stance, the high-quality one-piece canopy.

Then, of course, there are the winglets! The product of three years of engineering on three continents, using some of the best low-speed aerodynamic computer programs in existence, these new devices are beautiful, practical and sure to set the latest version of the Ximango apart from the earlier models. (Kits will be available to retrofit the 200 models.)

Inside the cockpit, the engine and propeller controls are matched to the new powerplant. Additionally, Grupo Aeromot has taken the opportunity to incorporate a number of refinements en bloc. Cabin ventilation has been completely reworked, opening up knee-room for the pilot. The throttle quadrant area has been redone, improving control accessibility. The trim tab has been replaced with a lower-drag spring cartridge system. A new 5-point harness, as well as a trick new HOSAS stick grip, is standard.

In flight, everything is largely unchanged in low-speed handling and feel. All the good characteristics of the Super Ximango 200 have been retained. The winglets add to the solid low-speed circling performance which sets the Super Ximango apart from other motorgliders.

Under power, two major differences await the pilot familiar with the Super Ximango. First, hot and high takeoffs are straightforward with 115 hp available at any density altitude possible at a U.S. airport. The normally aspirated Super Ximango 200 is no slouch in this area (owners have been operating from Durango and Boulder, CO for several years) but the Turbo Ximango sets a new standard here, with initial climb rates of 1200 fpm.

Second, the engine-on cruise speed of the Turbo Ximango has been improved to 140+ KTAS, which if youre using the Touring Glider for touring, is important. This faster cruise speed comes about from both its higher horsepower and also its higher altitude capability from turbocharging. The Turbo Ximango can climb faster to cruise altitude and cruise faster while there.

In summary, the new Turbo XImango offers a lot of new performance to anyone willing to pay the (relatively small) extra price: it takes off shorter, it climbs faster and higher, it cruises faster and it has a lot if other improvements built in. Taking into account the high quality of the Ximango and Grupo Aeromots reputation for engineering good engine installations, the new Turbo XImango will, almost assuredly, be a marketing success.
