  • A Mind Problem About Avgas/Mogas - jul 2003

    Ethan Graham

If you were to put 5 gallons of avgas in the left wing of a ximango
and 5 gallons of mogas in the right wing, the fuel gauge for the
right will indicate more fuel than the left.

This is a mind problem...do not try this at home...

Why? And how much more will be indicated?

    Thanks,
    Bruce

    Hi Bruce

The fuel indicators measure density , and since MOGAS differs in density
from Avgas it will indicate more with MOGAS, it can indicate up a quarter
    more!!!
IF you use MOGAS all the time you should recalibrate the Fuel Indicators. If
you use MOGAS only in emergency situations , then Drain the tank which you
have used MOGAS completely afterwards before going back to AVGAS  in order
to have accurate Indications again. Be conservative with range planning
using MOGAS and DUE NOT RELY ON THE INDICATORS.
