I actually delivered my plane for its annual last Friday. If it is
possible to receive a kit in the next several weeks the shop noted it
would save a considerable amount of time to do the AD when the plane
is opened up for inspection. It would be better to ship the kit
directly to the shop and I can have them contact you if one is
available.

Owners,
Ximango USA has been promised 20 kits to be shipped to us from the factory
NLT January 11. Allowing for transit time and re-shipment by us to you
individual owners, those of you that need "early" kits can get them on/about
January 18. If you are scheduling an annual inspection early in 2008 or have a
need to have the kit in hand soon, please e-mail me asap with your order and
shipping address. The second shipment will be several weeks later and, if you
do not need the kit soonest, please wait for that second shipment. (As we
understand it, owners have 50 hours of flight time to make the change.) Aeromot
is doing its best to meet our needs in North America and we all want to make
this painful process as painless as we can.
Please forward this message in its entirety to anyone you know needs it. I
am repeating my earlier message below , for anyone who didn't see it:
Everyone,
We want you to know that Ximango USA has been working this AD since we heard
of it. It came as a surprise to us, since the intention back in 2004 was to
furnish the USAF with a means to standardize their aircraft fasteners to
their written practices, not to change the civilian standards of JAR 22 as
applied to the Ximango. In fifteen years, and hundreds of thousands of flight
hours, Aeromot states that there has never been an unintended loosening report
for the fasteners affected.
However, Brazil has issued an AD and the FAA, by law, must follow suit. So,
here we are.
So far, we conclude there is no apparent way by alternate means to shortcut
the AD requirements to change the bolts and nuts. This is a futile effort,
we are convinced, after talking to the FAA at length. Specifically, you all
should be aware that drilling the existing bolts and changing the nuts is
NOT an option, because the required bolt length increases when the bolt is
drilled and equipped with a castellated nut and cotter pin. The bottom line is
you need to install the bolt kit called out in the Service Bulletin.
Our major effort at Ximango USA so far has been to arrange for bolt kits
from the factory at the most reasonable cost to owners and, in instances where
needed, to get them quickly. What we have arranged is that you all can buy
the factory bolt kit at cost - we and Aeromot have agreed not to make any
profit from this effort.
To manufacture the kit requires Aeromot to order the DIN bolts from Europe
of the proper length, drilling them in their shop, and combine them with the
proper nuts and cotter pins for shipment to us. We will parcel out the
shipment to individuals, by USPS mailer or FedEx as necessary. You all will be
billed only the cost of this effort, with no markup.
The cost of this kit is $380 plus shipping, which we estimate at $50 each
for the first 10 kits and $30 each for the remainder, to be shipped next
spring. Please let me know your needs. I know this is not a happy moment - but
we're trying to do our best!
Chuck

Chuck,
Happy and prosperous new year.
Thank you or keeping us informed with the FAA mandates.
My annual is due in January 2008. I would like you to bill and ship a kit to me.
Also, do you have a rear wheel steering device to push or pull the Ximango into a hanger.

Everyone,
We want you to know that Ximango USA has been working this AD since we heard
I know this is not a happy moment -
but
we're trying to do our best!
Chuck

Greetings all,
I received notice today from the FAA regarding a new AD that is about to be
issued. Doesn't look like much to it, but it references two Aeromot Service
Bulletins "SB 200-20-102" dated April 19, 2005, and "SB 200-20-102", dated
January 23, 2006.
Does anybody have a link to these Aeromot SB's or know where I can get a
copy, preferably in English.
Thanks!

I do not believe that the service bulletins, part catalogues, repari
manuals and other guides are available on-line. I hope I'm wrong.
What's this SB all about?

Dear All:
The SB is at:
http://intranet.aeromot.com.br/internet/bs_web/SB102 Rev. B.pdf
It calls for changing a fairly massive number of bolts with self locking
nuts to bolts with castled nuts and cotter pins. It is effective at next
inspection and the SB says it should take 8 hours but it seems that it
would take more. As you see I got it from the Ximangousa web site and
couldn't find it on the FAA site (but maybe it's there anyway).
Chuck: will you be selling the bolt kits?
Best
Ted

Ah, I'd gotten to that page before, but it being so slow, I had given
up before it downloaded. Whoa! Lots of bolts.

Thanks Ted!
It doesn't look that bad. Only ten bolts and a few other assorted parts like
the tail wheel axle. Eight hours is probably a reasonable figure. At least
it comes in December when the weather here is crummy. January starts our wave
season here in the Sequatchie Valley, though. I've already been seeing short
lennies lately now that the winter inversion has set up. I've got to get busy
on this or I risk missing the meat of our wave season.
Chuck: will you be selling the bolt kits?
I would hope so. These bolts appear to be metric and I doubt Spruce will
have them. Other parts shown in the list that are needed will certainly need to
come from Aeromot, since they appear to be proprietary.
Count me in, Chuck. I'd like to get the kit for this as soon as it's
available.

Well, bolt kits would be a great idea. Is there anything on the
Aeromot site to say they've got kits?
Chuck? What says you?
I'm going into annual next month, and I need to get cracking...
How did this happen?
How did these a/c get certificated if its bolt usage didn't conform
to FAA standards?
Or did the standards change?

Rest assured kits will be available.
This AD caught me by surprise - it originated as a USAF-requested change to
us, which we set up for their 14 aircraft. It was not intended to be applied
to the civilian fleet. Guess the Safety Gurus didn't want to leave it at
that.
It will take a little time to get the kits assembled, but we will be back

Chuck,
I guess it's politically incorrect to question things that are done in the interest of safety. It's very interesting that the USAF Academy no longer uses the Ximango's they purchased for cadet training. I know at least 4 of their fleet are now with the AF Test Pilots School at Edwards AFB (but kept tiedown outdoors at Mountain Valley Airport). What a waste of taxpayer dollars. Now they are asking for bolts with safety pins.....which may not necessarily be a bad thing, but is it warranted? Has there been even a single incident of any of these bolts coming loose with the locknuts originally used by Aeromot? I suspect there are no such incidents, but under the banner of safety and the federal we know better attitude, every Ximango owner in the US will now be required to comply with the AD.
I'll need a parts kit too. My annual is due in January.
I wonder if these bolt, castellated nut, and safety pin changes will result in the USAF Ximango's being used for the purpose for which they were purchased (cadet training) or if the aircraft will continue to be officer toys for the test pilot school.......
...yeah, the whole thing stinks to me.

Chuck and everyone,
Did any of you ever see the NPRM (Notice of Proposed Rule Making) that was supposedly issued by the FAA and published in the Federal Register on August 21, 2007?? I have had to deal with many AD's in the past on other aircraft I have owned, and have ALWAYS been notified by the FAA when a proposed new AD was in the works--so I as the owner of the subject aircraft for the AD could comment. I knew nothing about the proposed new rule, and therefore could not comment. This AD was really a surprise!!
The Ximango is loaded with many self-locking elastic stop nuts on bolts "subject to rotational loads" (to use the language of the AD). Only a small few are addressed in this AD (Thank God!). There are also all- metal self locking nuts that could be swapped out for the elastic stop nuts in question that would do the job just fine without the need to change the bolt with a drilled one for the castellated nut and cotter pin. I think we should push for this as an alternate means of compliance, but this opportunity is not even offered in the present AD. Most AD's usually have this caveat.
I hope the bolt kits will not cost us an arm and a leg!
Just my $0.02.

Dear Holliday and Fellow Blinded-sided Xoggers:
When I owned a Citabria, and the FAA wanted us to punch holes
everywhere in the wing, our user group asked for an alternative. And
got it.
Can't that be done here? I'll help anyway I can, but I don't know

Bruce,
I am not sure what to suggest. This AD has been published as a "Final Rule" and there is no means of addressing methods of "alternate compliance" as are usually mentioned in AD's.
I suppose we could start with a call to Greg Davison, Glider Program Manager with the FAA, and see what he says. His number is (816) 329-4130. I have, however, found him quite unresponsive on other glider matters I have contacted him about in the past.
It's worth a try, I suppose.
