Subject: Western Soaring Safari in 2005?
Hello Ximango People,
I'm thinking of putting together a Western Soaring Safari for Ximango
drivers for this next soaring season in 2005. I tentatively am planning it
for 4-5 days in one of the historically great soaring sites along the
eastern side of the Sierra Nevada range in Bishop California. Bishop is
located in the Owens Valley between two magnificent ranges of mountains,
the Sierra Nevadas to the west and the White Mountains to the east. I flew
Bishop for a week last month a had a great time with some really great
soaring weather. Thermals took me between 16,000 and 17,999 on each of the
5 days I flew. I logged 20 hours in the Ximango during the 5 days I was in
Bishop, 15 of which were with the engine shut down, and I covered 700 to
750 miles while in glider mode.
I would propose to hold the Western Soaring Safari from 7-4-05 to 7-8-05,
giving folks the weekends on either side of the week the opportunity to get
there and to get home (assuming you live in the US and west of the
Mississippi.) Bishop has a number of restuarants and hotels to choose from
and the town is located close to the airport. The airport itself offers 3
wide and long runways, 100LL, oxygen, etc.... The town also puts on a
really great fireworks show in the evening every 4th of July on the
northwest side of the airport. If all of what I've said thus far doesn't
intrigue you, perhaps the scenery, hiking, trout fishing, and tubing down
the Owens River might just put you over the edge. I've been fortunate to
have been able to vacation and fly in this area with my family for the last
25 years. Its a place we never seem to get tired of, and look forward to
going back to every year. If this idea sounds interesting to you, drop me
a note or give me a call sometime 858-385-7833 eves.
Rob

Dear Rob:
Great idea. We live in Connecticut though and would have to rent a glider to join. Any ideas?
Best
Ted

Ted,
There are some pure sailplanes (glass) for rent from Minden, and California
City. Not sure what the requirements are to do so. For folks who would want
to come from the east coast it might be an idea to buddy up with another
Ximango owner to fly one of the two ships out this way. Maybe a formation cross
country adventure? Another alternative might be to pick up a ride from Ximango's
that show up with only one person. We will have to see who all expresses an
interest in participating in this idea.

Folks
Olivia and I sold 200-091 a couple of months ago to Will Morris in France.
We have over 400 hours on the ship. If anyone is interested in a cross
country trip and need co-pilots we would be very interested in
participating.
good luck with the safari
Ken
